Course Description: First objective is to familiarize the students with concepts such as literary genre and the conventions of literature and their historicity. To this end we study in detail texts representing different genres (drama, fiction, poetry) and different literary movements (romanticism, realism, modernism). Second, the texts, which are chosen from the European literary tradition, are also used as examples in order to illustrate different methodological approaches (structuralism, reception theories, psychoanalytic and Marxist approaches).

Learning Oucomes : By the end of the course the students are expected to:

  1. Be able to decode the complex language of literature.

  2. Be able to discern the differences between literary genres.

  3. Be familiar with the basic premises of literary theory, namely the means by which we examine the literary phenomenon.

  4. Have required the skill of writing a short essay of literary criticism.

Assessment: Written exam, essay and oral presentation of essay in class
