Course description

The course examines the global environmental crisis and its consequences on the Earth. It aims at acquainting students with the history, the pedagogical philosophy, the didactical methodology and basic principles of environmental education. The course also investigates current trends in the field, focusing on early childhood environmental education. It aims to contribute to the comprehension of the interdisciplinary aspects of environmental education, to the critical approach and evaluation of educational material and environmental education programs and to the obtainment of basic skills for the design of environmental education programs.

Learning Outcomes 

By the end of the course, the students are expected to:

  •  be able to describe the basic dimensions of environmental crisis.
  •   be able to distinguish anthropocentric and ecocentric trends in environmental problems/issues.
  •  develop their own environmental consciousness.
  •  comprehend the background and the development of environmental education field.
  •  be familiar with supportive material and bibliography regarding environmental education.
  •  recognize current, innovative trends of environmental education.
  • be able to design the basic elements of an early childhood environmental education program, based on environmental education pedagogical principles and didactical methods.
