Course description

The course's purpose is to introduce and critically analyze fundamental issues that emerged after the genesis of modern Hellenism and extend to the 20th century, with a primary focus on the periods of Venetian and Ottoman rule, the Enlightenment, the establishment of the Greek state, etc. It is investigated the Latins' infiltration into the East and the status of Hellenism during the Turkish occupation in combination with the socio-economic and cultural parameters that defined it. Yet, the course of Greek society from the founding of the Greek state up to the 20th century is also investigated and the main topics being: the reign of King Otto; the emergence of irredentism and the concept of Megali Idea; the Eastern Question; the bankruptcy of 1893; the defeat in the Greco-Turkish of 1897; the Macedonian Question; the state of affairs from the Balkan Wars up until the abandonment of the Megali Idea national vision. At the same time, the course explores problems within the Greek society during both the interwar and the postwar periods.
