Course Description

 1.Introduction to the history of feminist literary theory and criticism. 2. Familiarisation with several theoretical issues that developed in the context of gender studies. 3. The detailed reading of literary texts written by both men and women writers from the perspective of feminist criticism and theories of gender. We examine the special ways in which these texts provoke us to understand what it means to be a woman, man, heterosexual or gay in specific historical and cultural contexts and whether they encourage or critique dominant gender norms.

Learning Outcomes

 By the end of the course students are expected to:

  • Be familiar with the history of feminism and basic premises of theories that have developed in the area of gender studies.
  • Be able to approach literary and other types of discourse from the perspective of gender.
  • Be informed and sensitised with respect to issues regarding gender and sexuality.
  • Exercise the skill of developing arguments, both orally and in writing.
