Course description

 The course is an introduction to the different meanings of the term "ideology" and other theories and concepts related to the ways in which we understand, construct and experience our identity and our social relationships, such as "reason", "social fantasy" "," Otherness ". Parallel critical reading of literary texts aims to understand the ways in which elements of literature (characteristics of literary genres, symbolic language, narrative, structure, character construction, metaphorical language, rhetoric, etc.) mediate and / or produce ideology. , explicitly or implicitly.

Learning outcomes

 Upon successful completion of the course, students are expected to:

  • have understood the different meanings of the term "ideology" in the context of basic Marxist and post-Marxist critical theories, but also to be able to relate ideology to theories of "discourse" as defined in the context of post-structuralist theory
  • be able to identify the ideological debates contained in literary texts, both explicit and covert
  • have understood the significance of discourse and literature in the formation of "self" and “other”
  • have studied in depth several literary texts to be able to critique them

Assessment

 The course assessment includes (a) written exam at the end of the semester and (b) oral presentation of essay. It is possible to prepare a written optional assignment for grade improvement.
