Modern Greek History: Socio-economic and Cultural Approaches

This class is about issues concerning the social, economic and cultural history during the Modern Period. In the first part of this course, the situation in which the urban and rural population lived during the 19th century, the ideological structure of the new Greek state, the elements which compose the national identity of Greek people and their tendencies to irredentism are under examination. In the second part, issues concerning education, such as the institutional frame of the educational system, the financial parameters of Otto’s educational policy, the phenomenon of “cultural patriotism”, the social strata and the Greek children’s access to education, [the education of females and the role of the educational system in the reproduction of social and productive relations will be discussed. Finally, in the third part, the issues under discussion are the economic, social and educational status of children and women during the 19th century. Αt the same time, those movements and perspectives are traced which will lead to the financial, social and cultural reality of the 20th century.
Aims/Objectives:
The purpose of the History Course is the cultivation of historical thinking and the formation of  historical perception, so that the students will be able to comprehend and interpret historical evolution and to adapt it to their own actions in a conscientious and responsible manner.
