Course description

This course aims at familiarizing students with theoretical issues in the field of educational management and administration (at the level both of school system and of school unit) as well as with issues in the field of educational policy.  In addition, this course aims at helping students to develop a more critical perspective and the ability to assess and evaluate the relative institutional regulation applied in Greece

During the lectures  of this course (6th semester) various topics are discussed, including: Educational management and administration as a field of study; The relationship between educational management / administration and business administration;  The evolution of administrative thought and science; International trends in the field of educational management / administration and the situation in Greece; Organizational theory; Centralized and decentralized systems of educational administration and comparative assesement of them;  Administrative positions in the structure of the Greek School Education System;  The work of schools administrators and their contribution to school effectiveness; Training, selection and professional development of school education administrators; Leadership roles in school education; Decision making in education; Innovations and reforms in education;  Motivation theory, job satisfaction and job stress of the teaching staff and administrators in school education; Concept and theoretical models of educational policy; The educational policy in Greece: actors and process.

 Expected learning outcomes

 At the end of this course, students are expected to:

► get familiarized with the main topics of the scientific branches of Educational Administration and Educational Policy as well as to have acquired knowledge, which, through further enrichment, will assist them to develop as effective administrators in school education

► monitor and understand the developments of the theory and the research within the scientific fields of Educational Administration and Educational Policy as well as to study critically the relative theoretical and research scientific publications

► realize and evaluate critically the relative institutions and the effectiveness of the school education system function at the political and the administrative level, and especially the way in which educational policy is formulated and implemented in Greece

►understand the functions which comprise the job of an educational administrator and the various roles he is expected to undertake as well as to find ways for putting them into practice within the framework of the school education system in Greece.

► clarify and understand fully the roles which they may be called to undertake as teachers or as administrators within the school education system.

► recognize the various approaches in exercising leadership and in managing human resources as well as to find ways of applying them within the Greek schools

► discuss, compare and evaluate the position of the school units and their teaching staff within various centralized and decentralized systems of school education
